Comment on South Ayrshire is Scotland’s tourism mecca. So says Mr Salmond, who insists the region attracts global interest wherever he goes. by Brian Day

Country houses are often set within fantastic uninterrupted countryside, except perhaps for the inevitable power station or wind turbines in the distance. However, the landscape is largely unspoilt by modern development. This is the attraction for many people, who can escape to the country for a day, a weekend or a week. The tranquil setting restores the weary soul, made weary by the rush and hassle of twenty-first century living. As an English Heritage volunteer room steward at Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, I can see that visitors are completely at ease as they wander around the place, as they enjoy the views from the upstairs or from the gardens. I am convinced that they leave with a renewed spirit.

Large-scale developments that would be a blot on the landscape must be resisted and cultural heritage preserved. Landscapes are as much a part of our cultural heritage as buildings. Government policy that fails to appreciate this must be opposed. I wish the Scottish people success in their endeavour to persuade their government to change their policy on the location of wind turbines.

This map is truly shocking. If these wind farms go ahead, our beautiful, unspoiled countryside will be no more. I am sure there are a few tourists who will see the wind turbines as a necessary part of the future of electricity production but there will be many many more who will say that they didn't travel to an area to look at wind turbines but rather beautiful scenery. One of the greatest assets of the South West of Scotland is that it is unspoiled. Let us keep it that way.

It was great to see the Holiday Southern Scotland team at Expo.Certainly there is very significant potential to link together many of the facilities and attractions in south west Scotland into a series of customised tourism related offerings .The Ayrshire food network will be delighted to play its part in this coordinated effort.
